"43 Mauser" with Cast bullets

A bit of range footage from a few years ago when I was trying some commercial cast bullets in a "43 Mauser" rifle. The rifle is a Mauser 71/84 in 11×60mm Mauser that at some point had been modified into a "short rifle" configuration. Ammo is composed of modified 45/70 brass with a commercial 380 grain cast bullet, one batch loaded with a charge of Alliant Unique and the other with Alliant 2400 ...

    Very advisable video, it is best to use quality once fired reclaimed hulls as your start point such as Win AA or Rem Gun club, the pleats are better formed and good crimps are of the norm as you keep loading them over and over. also, as you said, the crimping station takes a bit getting used to as you develop a "Feel" for if your load is the right Hight. However, that "feel" stays with you even if you get another machine like a MEC. On another subject, I'm surprised that you don't make your own shot. I believe you told me that you have someone at the club that does and you get it from him. - Dave

    Fine example of English craftmanship, even the war issue Enfield series of rifles are wonderfully made, lots of fine machining, and relief cuts in their receiver's, the sights are hashed so that they do not reflect light, (Well, late guns during WW-2 were just rifles to fulfill the need and production could not afford all the fancy stuff) all thing's that are from a bygone area of quality that was expected of manufacturing. I love the Lee rifles in the way they were made, they are Nice guns - Dave

      Yes, even the WW1 Lee Enfield rifles were decently made. Considering the huge quantities they made that was quite an accomplishment.

    The 26 grains load was pretty impressive, people have to take into account that these bullets cost mostly time to make, however the dollar amount is penny's per bullet, the accuracy you can get from experimentations can rival any custom jacketed bullet out there. I really like this type of content, it shows that with a little work (If you can call it that because a majority of people enjoy casting and such) you can get fine accuracy that fills 95% of our shooting. peace - Dave

    • @314299
      @314299 23 години тому

      Looking back the good group with the 26 grain load could just have been a random occurrence. I'm surprised it shot that well considering the chronograph numbers. I really should load some more up and see if it's repeatable or if it was just a fluke. Speaking of consistency I was out the other day with my 30/06 Howa 1500 trying some RCBS 30-165-SIL bullets with Accurate 5744 powder. That powder gives amazing consistent velocities with cast bullets, firing over twenty shots the standard deviation was just 10 FPS. It would have made for interesting video but the range was just too busy to film.

    The question I’ve been looking for in the comments is, you mentioned you might get up to 3 to 5 reloads using other methods: if reloading using this tool prolongs cartridge life, how many reloads could you expect using the Lee Reloader Set?

    • @314299
      @314299 2 дні тому

      Like many things, it depends on mostly on a couple of factors The firearm used makes a difference, brass used in a P-14 tends to last longer than that used in Lee Enfield rifle. Another factor is how "hot" the load is, brass loaded with a milder load will last longer. It is pretty safe to predict at least ten to twenty loading when using a Lee Loader.

    I hate to say it you’re not an old-time caster. You take a candle to the mold and carbon the whole mold with the candle that will release anything that’s in the mold and you won’t have a problem banging on it.🧐

    • @314299
      @314299 День тому

      So I'm not an "old-time caster" am I? Well, I've been casting for close to 40 years at this point. Yes I'm quite aware of smoking molds and have done it myself to aluminum molds, however a good quality mold used with good alloy/temperature does not NEED to be smoked. Iron molds should never be smoked. Aluminum ones like the Lee products sometimes work better if smoked, but smoking a poorly made, defective mold like the one in the video will not magically cure it. I have dozens of Lee molds and for the most part they are satisfactory, but this one was a piece of junk that should not have been allowed out of the factory.

    M1891 Carcano rifle barrels have Progressive Rifling meaning that the base with the exposed lead bottom will expand midway to the middle of the barrel and squeeze through till it exits the barrel. This is not new, the 1891 Carcano barrel came from the 19th Century barrel system to the Minie bullet to where the base expands to grasp the rifling starting big from the top of the mouth as the brass casing's neck and shoulder expand to seal the gasses so there is minimal gases blowing back through the chamber into the rifleman. The Carcano in my opinion had the split designed receiver like the German M1888 with dual lug for safety and strength. The long 6.5mm diameter long slender bullet was designed to expand at the base supported by the long jacket to cruise through the rifling as it gets smaller as it exits and have a stable flight to it's target. During the late 1890s, barrels of German, Austrian, French, Scandinavian countries had same bore diameter designs from mouth to crown to deliver consistent accuracy with one standard. The Italians through Salvatore Carcano had designed the Italian Army's rifles using the Progressive Rifling system dating back to the Black Powder Era, thinking that with much more better powders using an expandable base and Progressive Rifling would enhance accuracy. The only Italian Army formations that complained about this before WWI and after was the Bersaglieri and the Alpini Mountain troops who are above marksman from the Italian conscript infantry. The Italian Army never corrected this because producing more rifles and ammo means they can arm more troops to fight the Austrians and Germans in Northern Italy.

    • @314299
      @314299 День тому

      I take issue with your statement that the bullet "base with the exposed lead bottom will expand". No it wont. Unless radically "cupped" at the base there is no way a jacketed bullet will expand at the base as the jacket is just too thick to allow that. Also the jacket at the base is rolled in to reinforce the bullet.

    I think Zastava is using out of spec cherrys in the boring of their 7.62x39 tubes. I have a M70 Zpap with a freaking .315 bore. The gun will not group anything I mean I dont expect dime size groups from a AK but pie plate groups at a 100 yards it just plain sad. I did manage to cast up some MP 312.159 mold castings. That drops from the mold at .314 plus I added powder coating to get a .315ish 150 grain HP. So with that projectile on top of 27.2 grains of H4895 and Norma brass and a Fed GM210M I’ll see a 3” to 2.5” 5 shot groups at 100.

    • @314299
      @314299 16 днів тому

      I'm going to assume you mean .315" groove as a .315" bore would give you a barrel that a bullet would just fall thru. I'm not suprised that a .315 groove barrel shoots poorly with standard size bullets, hopefully your powder coated ones can improve on that.

    So ive got some stockpile of lead and it seems to flow well but i think its got zinc contamination to it ad its not casting with that silverish shine to it Or is it the tin that gives it the shine due to it making it flow better?

    • @314299
      @314299 3 дні тому

      If you had zinc contamination your alloy would be completely unusable for casting. Tin will certainly improve alloy flow, but the big difference between shiny and dull looking bullets seems to be the temperature that you are casting at. Shiny bullets are no advantage IMO, other than in a cosmetic sense. I cast hot with wheel weights and that solves most issues for me.

    • @entity9742

      Yes, they do rotate a little, but they dont rotate fast enough to give sufficient gyroscopic rotation to ensure stability and accuracy. The rotation these slugs attain is not as a result of the ridges or "rifling" on the surface of the slug - even smooth "unrifled" slugs will rotate when fired from a smooth barrel. Rotation of this sort of projectile is caused by fine rotary honing marks on the surface of the barrel. Perhaps those smooth sided slugs "self identify as rifled"?

    The Canuck can be loaded same as IVI imperial. I just picked up a big bag of Canadian tire branded number 2 lead. Never knew they sold primed hulls though.

      I just toss all my cheddites together as long as they’re the same length. A Quick Look at the basewad and comparing it to a know shell will tell you if it’s cheddite or fiocchi. The clear 20ga look more like fiocchi maybe.

    • @314299
      @314299 21 день тому

      Yes the internal capacity of the Imperial and Canuck shells is the same. As for the shells being sold as primed hulls I've never seen them that way before these ones. When Imperial / IVI got out of making sporting ammo there were a lot of leftover components sold off, perhaps that's where the primed hulls came from.

    Seems gotta grab what you can for powder these days. Gun shows are probably the best place to find it. I got a really old square can of 2400 at the last gunshow for $10.

    • @314299

      That's a good deal. 2400 is a great powder, especially if you are into cast bullets.

    Nice to see the old girl out for a range day. I just found a Rem 788 bolt action 30-30 that I'll bring up to standard and use on my deer hunts. Bolt action 30-30s are great rifles

      I would like to add a 788 in 30/30 to my collection but they are somewhat uncommon and when they do come up for sale are expensive.

      @@314299 Took me 2 decades to find one in decent shape with a decent price. The 44 mag took me 3 decades to find one. This 30-30 is a handy deer rifle but there are just so few of them left in the wild.

    Dominion primers are made in Canada. Later became imperial and CIL.

    • @314299
      @314299 27 днів тому

      The "Dominion" brand primers that I have been using are not the original old Canadian made ones. These are Russian made ones imported by Canada Ammo a decade ago they are made by a company called Murom. Original Canadian made Dominion primers have not been available at retail since the 1970's.

    I got the same rifle except mine came with a pic rail welded to it instead of the dove tail to mount an optic to. Its actually welded on slightly crooked. Kinda made it difficult to mount a scope but it works

    I’m guessing that the non gas seal rounds still have cylinder gas bite?

    • @314299
      @314299 29 днів тому

      If you mean gas escaping from the barrel/cylinder gap then yes, with the non gas seal rounds that happens.

    My loads using 15 grains of ww296 and 5 Double OO 3 inch Cheddites put all 5 in a 13 inch circle at 35 yards so I am happy with mine , Nice video , and by the way I was using an older Western Field bolt action 410 that held 3 rounds made in like the 1960's apparently by Mossberg, full choke.

    • @314299
      @314299 Місяць тому

      I think the main reason the patterns start to open up so much with distance is that the Baikal has very tight choke, although listed as "full" it is more like "extra full" and so too tight for these buckshot pellets. I expect your Western Field bolt action would have a normal degree of choke and therefore work better with buckshot pellets.
